Providing a Top K-12 Educational Experience for Children and Families in Central Los Angeles

A Community-Based Urban Education Demonstration, Training, and Research Center

UCLA and LAUSD are launching UCLA Community School, a new urban education partnership that will bring the university’s world-class resources to one of central Los Angeles’ most underserved neighborhoods.

The UCLA Community School will open in September of 2009 serving students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 and will expand the following year to include approximately 800 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12.

This neighborhood school will be one of six Pilot Schools located at the new LAUSD Ambassador Schools Complex on Wilshire Blvd. in Central Los Angeles. UCLA and its Education department are working closely with Los Angeles Unified School District Local District 4, and several community-based organizations to create an innovative and rigorous K-12 educational program for our community.

For principal Georgia Lazo, the UCLA Community School is both brand new and full of memories. "When I see children walk in the door, I see myself in some ways. When I see their parents, I see my own and how very hard they worked to ensure that I received a quality education," Lazo says.

Lead teacher Mario Perez calls the new school his "dream job" because "it's an opportunity to bring everything I believe about education together with my own passion for working with students in a nurturing place."       [READ MORE....]
